Kutztown University Exiles 7’s Team Qualifies for MARFU Elite Eight
The Exiles are the first 7’s team to represent the University and the Rugby Club in summer competition. They are also, the only college team in the nation to earn a regional, elite eight, national qualifying position. They lost their bid to gain a spot in the national tournament last weekend, but only by inches. They qualified for the MARFU Championship 7’s Tournament with this summer resume. They won the Wilmington Subaru 7’s and were semi-finalist at the Baltimore/Chesapeake 7’s and the Richmond 7’s. They then placed at the MARFU qualifying tournament in Wilmington, Delaware.
Along the way they defeated some notable opposition – University of Delaware, Towson University, Wilmington RFC and Norfolk RFC. They tied Baltimore Chesapeake RFC and the Lancaster RFC. However, their brightest day came in the National Qualifier at the MARFU Championships. Here they played three of the best teams in the country and came so close. They defeated the Norfolk RFC, lost to Charlotte RFC and then tied the number one ranked and undefeated 7’s team in the nation, the NOVA RFC. The score was 12-12 and the contest was heralded as the best match of the day and up until now, the closest NOVA has come to losing all summer. The Exiles are here to stay.
In 2011 we have made plans to expand the program and include the registration of Kutztown alumni on the side, making the Exiles a Kutztown tradition for years to come.
